First and
foremost – writing is a craft, not a channeled, random order of
words attributed to some obscure part of the brain. The craft of
writing, according to Stephen King, has one predominant rule: “Omit
needless words” – there, all is said.
Here are some of my favorite quotes on
writing:
Even Gustave Flaubert confessed the following; "I am irritated by my own writing. I am like a violinist whose ear is true, but whose fingers refuse to reproduce precisely the sound he hears within."
If ones failure to produce the right word at the right time, within the right plot, spoken by the right person is not enough, remember Red Smith saying that “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein.” Veins have been opened, the blood has stained my keyboard and my notepad, even the sleeves of my barren shirt and hopefully one day the blood will form words that will be loved by some, get some to chuckle, or even cry, or just say, “I’ve felt this way before.” After all, the virtue of books it to be readable and it is a cardinal sin to bore the reader.
